One of the very first lessons I learned in my life was that the five fingers are not equal however each serves a role vital to the function of the hand. The more I dive in the meaning of equal, the more I am convinced it does not exist. Even in elemental form we take the average atomic mass due to variation. Equality existing would take away the uniqueness we have and would disturb the true function of the hand. The hand is a prototype for how functionalism should work within a society.
So what is the meaning for all of this ? That even though things are not always equal on the hand each plays a critical aspect. Life is not fair, but each lesson is necessary for the next lesson you will encounter. The place you have in a functional society is one of pertinence. The world is not fair and I am pretty sure it will never be but the removal or altering of a thumb or an index finger will alter the whole hand.
